Wompi vs Bold vs Mercado Pago comparison for Colombian SMBs (2026)

2026-05-108 min· Juan José Trujillo Cardozo

This comparison comes from a real decision at TRUJO TECHNOLOGIES. We evaluated Wompi (Bancolombia), Bold, and Mercado Pago for collecting from our clients. Concrete numbers follow.

Real 2026 rates

Wompi Advanced Plan: 2.65% + COP $700 + 19% VAT per successful transaction. Effective rates: 4.20% at COP $80K, 3.57% at COP $200K, 3.21% at COP $1.5M.

Bold Standard (free account, no Bancolombia required): Nequi 1.50%, credit card 2.99%, debit 1.79%, PSE 1.30%. No fixed fee, no additional VAT.

Mercado Pago: credit card 3.49% + COP $500, debit 1.99% + COP $500, PSE 1.79% + COP $500, MP wallet-to-wallet 0%.

Head-to-head

Bold wins for Nequi at every ticket size. At COP $200K: Wompi 3.57% vs Bold 1.50% — Bold saves COP $4,140 per transaction. For credit card at high tickets (above COP $1M), Wompi and Bold converge within 2 percentage points. Mercado Pago loses against both for medium/high tickets unless you need split payments.

When to choose each

Wompi: existing integration, PSE coverage across all 23 Colombian banks, or average ticket above COP $1M. Bold: no Bancolombia account, clients primarily pay via Nequi, low volume where Wompi's COP $700 fixed fee hurts, or startup needing 100% digital onboarding. Mercado Pago: marketplace split payments, existing MP wallet balances, or multi-country LATAM coverage.

Our decision

Our clients pay primarily via Nequi. At COP $200K-$400K monthly tickets, the 2.07 percentage point difference is COP $4,140-$8,280 per transaction — not worth giving to Bancolombia. We had no active Bancolombia corporate account. Bold Standard is our primary gateway. Wompi stays as documented Plan B for clients needing full PSE bank coverage.

What none of them solve well

Automatic recurring billing without client intervention. Wompi has card tokenization but automatic monthly debit requires additional bank agreements. Bold Standard has no native recurring payments in 2026. Mercado Pago subscriptions have restrictions in Colombia. Our current solution: manual invoicing with automatic WhatsApp reminders and Bold payment links.

The golden rule: build the cost table with your real numbers (average ticket × monthly volume × effective rate for your clients' actual payment method) and choose what maximizes what stays in your business.
